Fog over the harbor

Fog over the harbor, digital sketch
Digital sketch based on a trip snapshot.

The forecast said overcast with a chance of drizzle, which in my experience is the best forecast a coastal walker can get. I left the apartment a little after six, coffee in a thermos, and reached the marina just as the fog horn started its slow count.

Fog simplifies everything. The masts disappear a few boats down the pier, the far shore is gone entirely, and what is left is a handful of shapes and a lot of soft grey. I spent most of the hour just standing still and watching the boundary move as the tide came in.

The sketch here started from a phone snapshot. Back home I reduced the scene to two layers of hills and a reflection, and pushed the palette toward the blue-grey I actually remember rather than what the camera recorded.

Notes for next time: bring gloves, even in August. And walk out to the end of the breakwater before the fishermen arrive, it is much quieter.
